1. University of Tokyo

The University of Tokyo is the highest ranked university in Asia (21st in the World according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities). Other rankings put it as high as 6th in the World. 

The University of Tokyo has it's roots in a Edo-era academic institutions such as the Astronomy Agency (1684). It's current enrollment is 30,000 students (6.5% foreign students).

2. Kyoto University

Japan's second oldest university promotes itself as having a "spirit of freedom". It seems to be working, Kyoto University claims six Nobel Laureates. Kyoto is an ancient city withthousands of temples and shrines. It's the perfect university town.

3. Osaka University

Osaka University ranks as high as 43rd in the the World. It's particularly strong for law, sciences, technology and medicine.

4. Keio University

Keio is Japan's oldest university (1858). It's politically connected — its alumni include three Japanese prime ministers. Currently, 2.4% of Global Fortune 500's CEOs are Keio alumni. 

Keio needs to work on its international reputation. Within Japan it's widely ranked as a top university. However, internationally it only ranks 320th in the world (2012 Times Higher Education World University Rankings).

5. Tokyo Institute of Technology

The Tokyo Institute of Technology is 37th in the World in the field of Engineering and Technology (2009 Academic Ranking of World Universities).

A small university in downtown Sapporo that's ranked 139th in the World (QS World University Rankings).

7. Tohoku University

Tohoku University is often ranked amongst the top 50 universities in the World. Its three core principles are: research first, an open-door policy and practice oriented research and education.

8. Nagoya University

Nagoya University's core values are to promote intelligentsia with courage by providing an education which respects independent thought. It's working — its alumni include four Nobel Prize winners.

9. Tsukuba University

Tsukuba University is one of Japan's oldest universities (1872). Its strong academic traditions have propelled it into Japan's top 10. Tsukuba University is ranked 172nd in the world (QS World University Rankings). Its alumni include 3 Nobel laureates. Tsukuba's campus is the largest in Japan (636 acres).

10. Kobe University

Kobe University has an excellent reputation for a relatively new university. It was founded after WWII in 1949.
